DO WE LIMIT GOD?

DO WE LIMIT GOD? I know that is a big question and some may find it ridiculous and some may even say that it is the wrong question to ask. In Ephesians 3:20 it is stated that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” So do we ask big things of God? Do we imagine that God is able to do more than we could ever imagine that He could do? Do we in essence limit God’s work in our life? In Ephesians 3:18 the Apostle Paul states that he is praying that Christians would have the power to “grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” for them. In my lifetime of ministry as a Pastor I have found many Christians who never really could grasp the depth of Christ’s love for them. Often they could not forgive themselves for sins they had committed and they could not imagine God forgiving them either. The problem often is that they don’t grasp the fact that God is able to do more than we can do. We need “to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God,” (Ephesians 3:19 NIV). God does want to do more than what we could ask of Him or imagine from Him.

 

As the body of Christ, the Church, we also need to understand that God is speaking to us collectively as a group also when Paul says, “to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen,” (Ephesians 3:20 NIV). God wants His Church to ask great things of Him, greater things than we as His people would normally ask or even think. We have a great God and our great God wants to use His Church to demonstrate to the world how great a God we have and what our great God can do. God also wants us as Christians and as His Church to “be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace,” (Ephesians 4:1-2 NIV). Maybe that is the area where we should begin asking and imagining. Think of it; God’s Church and its members living together in unity and the bond of peace.
