Thief! There are thieves everywhere in life. If you have been breathing very long you realize that is a true statement. I have been the victim of many thieves of real property and emotional and mental properties. But yesterday was a first for me. Someone stole my personalized license plate from my auto as the car was parked on a church parking lot during a worship service. I don’t know whether they have a grudge against the Marine Corps, against me personally or whether they just wanted a plate to put on a wall at home or maybe on a stolen car. At least they left me the screws with which to attach the new license plate I will need to get today. And the Pastor of the church was very distraught. “Why did they take your plate?” he asked, “with all the others on the lot?” Well I don’t have the answer to that question.
Jesus reminds us that thieves are all around us and they are after our possessions. Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal,” (Matthew 6:19 NIV). Sometimes they don’t have to break in. They just steal in the middle of the day right out in public. So Jesus reminds us that things like license plates aren’t really important and neither are other material possessions in life in relation to eternity. As Jesus said, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also,” Matthew 6:20-21 NIV). The thief stole my license plate but he didn’t steal my soul, my relationship with Jesus, or my love for the Pastor and the church I worshipped in while he stole my license plate. I will be back.
