PRAISE OR QUESTION?
PRAISE OR QUESTION? We should praise God all the time but sometimes we have questions for God; at least I do and certainly the Psalmist did. In Psalm 9 King David said, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing the praises of your name, O most high,” (Psalm 9:1-2 NIV). There are times in life when all we can do is thank and praise God and consider all that He has done for us and with us and then just rejoice in Him. In those moments we are amazed at how great God is. The Board of Directors of Caribbean Vision Ministries took such a moment yesterday for each to share God’s one, or some, of God’s greatest impact moments on their lives in 2018 and just praise Him for it. It was a time to give thanks to God with all our hearts and tell of His wonderful deeds. And it was a joy to hear how God is at work in people’s hearts and lives. How can you not be glad and rejoice in times like those?
But there are also those times when we have questions for God like the Psalmist did in Psalm 10, “Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1 NIV). The Psalmist goes on to describe how wicked people in the world are and also their horrible misdeeds and how they seem to escape any consequences for their actions. And the Psalmist cries out for God to take action. There are times we have questions for God, at least I do. I don’t always understand what God is doing and how He is accomplishing His purposes but I agree with what the Psalmist said, “But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand,” (v.14 NIV); “You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,” (v.17 NIV). Yes, those moments of praise are wonderful but even in those moments of great questions we can trust in God and know that He has matters in hand and is listening to our questions and our cries to Him. That certainly brings great comfort.
