PAIN! There is a lot of pain in this world. In my years as a local church Pastor I observed it on a lot of levels in a lot of areas such as physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Pain often reminds us that something is wrong and that we need to deal with it. Yesterday I was in a hospital outpatient waiting room and recovery room for about eight hours because I was assisting a family member. There was a lot of pain in both those places. As I observed the many people who came and went during this day it was obvious many of them were in pain in many ways; some as patients and some who were assisting them. It was also interesting to watch those who worked for the hospital such as doctors, nurses, office personnel, greeters, janitors, and cashiers. Most of these people were professionals and most were very kind, courteous, and helpful to the patients and their families. The people involved as patients and staff were from many different backgrounds, races, cultures, countries, spoke a variety of languages and were all focused on one thing. They wanted to help the patient who had a health problem that in most cases was causing real pain.

I couldn’t help wondering as I observed these people just how many of them were Christians. It was obvious that some were Christians from a variety of spiritual backgrounds. It was also obvious that many were not Christians and for all of them my heart went out because of the pain they were experiencing and how the cause of that pain was affecting so many lives. In a place like this medical facility we are reminded of the hope set before us, “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies,” (Romans 8:19-24 NIV). The sin that came into this world through Adam’s actions has brought unmitigated pain into the creation itself and into our lives as human beings. Pain of all kinds will continue until Jesus brings final redemption to the creation and to mankind. Thank God it is possible to find peace and redemption in the midst of all this pain through our Lord Jesus Christ and we are surrounded by people who need to hear His message. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid,” (John 14:27 NIV). Adam brought the pain but Jesus gives the comfort. Share the message.
