GUARD YOUR HEART!
GUARD YOUR HEART! The heart is vital to life and living and the care of it is a huge part of the medical profession today. Doctors, medication, clinics, diets, and on it goes. If it stops permanently beating you are dead. We have a machine beside our bed that constantly monitors my wife’s heart. If her heart acts abnormal in any way it sends a signal to a machine in the doctor’s office so they can keep track of her physical wellbeing. Now we are not sure whether this is needed or not and she evidently has never had any episodes that are cause for alarm. In the bible the heart is often referred to not as the heart organ that is so vital physically but rather as that part of you from which all thoughts and actions flow.
The writer of the book of Proverbs tells us how vital this kind of heart care is, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it,” (Proverbs 4:23 NIV). I would say American Christians probably take care of their physical hearts pretty well because of our belief in our medical system and our use of it. But I am not sure we value the advice in Proverbs quite as much. The writer says, “Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil,” (Proverbs 4:24-27 NIV). How sad it is if someone works at keeping their physical heart healthy while their spiritual heart deteriorates and becomes worse or disintegrates. While we need to take care of both our physical heart and our spiritual heart we need to consider the eternal value of each and make the needed corrections in proper care. GUARD YOUR HEART!
