THE GOLDEN RULE!
THE GOLDEN RULE! You may have learned “the golden rule” as a child and not even realized that Jesus was the author of the rule. In fact Jesus pretty well summed up the Old Testament in sharing this “rule” with us. Here is the way He stated it, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets,” (Matthew 7:12 NIV). You may have heard the “rule” simply stated, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” So simple. So hard to do. And often misquoted in a lot of perverted ways. It is amazing that out of all Jesus said in the Sermon On The Mount in chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew this may be the one verse that people remember most.
How are you and I doing in living this verse? It is a simple “rule” given by God to us but it is certainly one of the hardest things for most of us to do. Do we treat God the way we want Him to treat us? How about our actions with family members, co-workers, those we interact with every day, and even our neighbors next door? As Christians I think most of us really want to live this “rule” in our lives. Yet, how often do we embarrass ourselves and fail to live the “rule” and then have to apologize? The “rule” doesn’t mean that we approve the behavior of those who sin, or that we should help others to break the law, or be lazy or be dishonest, or be rude, or cover all their failures in life. But the “rule” does mean that how we treat people and respond to people should reflect the character of Jesus in our lives. After all we should live what we say we believe and just maybe for some people we may be the only “real” Christian they know. So we need to ask God to help us really live out the “golden rule” today and every day of our lives; one day at a time.
