QUESTIONS? I don’t know about you but I have a lot of questions for God and it seems like God is not always interested in answering my questions. Well, God is God and He can do what He likes. After Jesus was resurrected and spent some time with the Apostles they had a great question for Jesus. “They gathered around him and asked him, ‘Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?’ (Acts 1:6 NIV). That seemed like a logical question since Jesus had taught them a lot about a future kingdom and the fact that Jesus would be in charge of the Kingdom and they would rule and reign with Him. I think most Christians have a lot of questions for God and to most of us those questions seem to be very logical and we really would like an answer from God that puts to rest our curiosity. The Apostles were not so different from us in that regard and Jesus’ answer to the question I am sure caught them off guard just like God’s answer to us often throws us off balance.
Jesus said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority,” (Acts 1:7 NIV). End of story, shut up and go home, not exactly! There was more to Jesus’ answer to them, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth,” (Acts 1:8 NIV). Not exactly the answer the Apostles were looking for I am sure. The same thing often happens to us. We seem to receive an answer but it is not exactly the answer we are looking for and seems often to be unrelated to the question we ask. But God had greater plans for the Apostles than they could ever imagine and all they had to do was follow Jesus’ instructions as related to the answer to their question. When we ask questions of God we should be prepared to be surprised when He does answer our questions. And sometimes He may simply say, “It is not for you to know,” and then we must be like the Apostles and just follow what God advises us to do in His Word, the Bible. After all Jesus does speak to us there.
