TEMPTATION!

TEMPTATION! We all face it every day in multiple ways and sometimes we give into it without thinking. Temptation may be as small as the urge to sleep in on a morning when we know we should be up and doing something important. Or it may be as big as taking something of value that doesn’t belong to us or to hurt someone’s reputation by telling a lie about them. Temptation may come in areas of our life where we are really morally weak or where our fears cause us to fail even when we know to give in to those fears are wrong. When we grow in our Christian faith and think that we can resist temptation every time in any area without failing then we may be set up for failure. Jesus knows that our sin nature and our enemy the devil are very strong producers of temptation and they know where we are most vulnerable.

In the night before the crucifixion of Jesus He went to the place called Gethsemane with the Apostles Peter, James, and John to spend time in prayer. Jesus said to them, “keep watch with me,” as He went a little farther to pray. When Jesus returned He found the Apostles asleep. His response to them was, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak,” (Matthew 26:41 NIV). Things have not changed much in two thousand years for the followers of Christ. The warning, advice and encouragement of Jesus are still accurate and real. The Bible is full of commands, principles, advice and warnings of God regarding our living and the temptations that are all around us. Like the Apostles we may have a strong desire and commitment to follow in Jesus’ footsteps in this world but we find our flesh is weak and often we are not as watchful about all areas of our life as we should be. Very often we fill our lives with too many things and activities and do not spend the time in prayer as we should and we develop kinks in our armor that Satan may attack and tempt us to sin. Temptation it seems will come when we least expect it and though our spirit is willing and has the desire to follow God we often fall to temptation because we are not watchful and prayerful on a daily and moment by moment basis.
