IMPORTANT WORDS! Our world is filled with words in our generation; newspapers, books, magazines, phones, radio, TV, CD’s, DVD’s, Ipods, Internet, and it seems every conceivable kind of electronic device you can imagine. It is hard to escape people and words. There is no doubt communication is vital and important. But how important are most of the words filling the air around us today. And how many of those words speak truth and how many are just blatant lies. Words can heal or hurt or help. Words can inform or deceive. Some words just temporarily pass by our ears and others stick in our memory forever. Some words are words of deception spoken by Satan or the deceivers of this world and others are the actual Words of God that have eternal consequences. God’s words are very important.
Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away,” (Matthew 24:35 NIV). That statement by Jesus helps a Christian to put things into context of what is important and what is not. The only place where we can be assured of what Jesus’ words are is the Bible. That makes the Bible important and the eternality of the words of Jesus, which will “never pass away” along with the truth of those words, should cause our ears to perk up and pay attention. Jesus also proclaimed the importance of the Bible and its’ words in the Sermon on the Mount, when He said, “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished,” (Matthew 5:18 NIV). In contrast to the lack of importance of the volume of words filling the airways today stands the Word of God, the Bible, which offers words of real and lasting value. As a Christian we should ask ourselves the question, “What words am I filling my life with today and how important are those words?”
