MARRIAGE! Some people think marriage is old fashioned and outdated. Others think it is unnecessary and doesn’t mean much. Some think it is OK to have multiple husbands or wives and some think sex orientation in marriage doesn’t matter and that somehow we now have multiple types of human beings beyond male and female. And the media, politicians, and entertainment personalities of our day attempt to influence all of society into one particular viewpoint of acceptance or else be ostracized and ridiculed. Jesus was not intimated by the influence makers of His day and He boldly proclaimed what God thinks of the bible, sexes, and the sanctity and longevity of marriage. Not only is marriage taken lightly in our society but that viewpoint also existed in Jesus’ day as well. To those people and to us Jesus said, “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh, Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate,” (Matthew 19:4-6 NIV).
By these words,”haven’t you read,” Jesus authenticated and put His stamp of approval on the book of Genesis and the Old Testament Scriptures (Genesis 2). That is the place where these people would have read and learned these things. Jesus points out that God made a male and a female for very special purposes in life and the relationship between the two is so intimate that it is “like” being one person in body, soul and spirit as they bond together. God intended that this relationship between the man and the woman should last a life-time and that no one should dare to work in any manner to separate them. God views marriage as being between a man and a woman and God views marriage as a serious relationship that should produce fantastic results for the marriage partners, their children, and the society they live in. When a person fights against the male-female marriage relationship they are fighting against God who said, “let no one separate,” this relationship. It would be good if everyone followed God’s guidelines on marriage and it would be good if all marriages were life-long relationships lived in bliss and success. But people are sinful and we live in a sinful world and often, very often, marriages fail. That was never God’s intention. God had good plans for the people He created. God in His love for all mankind, including those who suffer through failed marriages, sent His Son Jesus to care for all our sins, hurts, and pains through His sacrifice on the cross. But the sins and failures of people don’t invalidate God’s truth and desire for us as found in the Bible.
