EXHAUSTED? TIRED OF THE WAY LIFE IS GOING? I think everyone reaches this point at some time in their life. Maybe you are different but I think not. In fact maybe that is you today. Jesus knows all about people and the trials of life. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light,” (Matthew 11:28-20 NIV). A little earlier in Matthew (chapter 9) Jesus noted that the crowds that followed him were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. Undoubtedly there are many today who feel just like that. Jesus knows all about us and how those conditions may befall us. That is why Jesus invites us to come to Him for intimacy and a relationship with Him as we attempt to navigate this world we live in. There is no doubt that the trials and problems of this world can burden us and wear us down. But in Jesus there is relief to be found from these things.
The picture of a yoke reminds us of two animals tied together by a wooden harness so they can pull a heavy load but even then the animals get tired and exhausted by the end of the day. Jesus reminds us that as we struggle with life’s heavy burdens and loads that we need to “hook up” with Him because when we are yoked with God no burden is too heavy for us to deal with. When we are in the yoke with Jesus burdens will get lighter and easier, not because of our strength and abilities, but because nothing is too hard or impossible with God. Our energy, strength, abilities, and wisdom reach their human limits in seemingly overwhelming circumstances. Life can overwhelm us and exhaust us but when Jesus is in the yoke and we rely on Him totally and completely we will find rest for our souls. Without Jesus we can be harassed, helpless, exhausted, and tired of life. But when we are willing to submit to Jesus totally and completely and let him carry the load as we yoke with Him we will be refreshed and renewed in our journey through life.
