WHEN JESUS IS IN THE BOAT THINGS ARE OK! The passage begins rather quietly, “Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him,” (Matthew 8:23 NIV) It seems this was not an uncommon event. Several of his disciples were fishermen and most of them were used to being around the Lake of Galilee so in their minds this would be just another trip on the water. The trip was so common that Jesus went to sleep. This is not unlike most of us as we start our day. It will be just another day with common events. But things can change in a hurry, “Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping,”(v.24). I don’t know if you have ever been on a boat taking on water but I can tell you it can be a frightening experience. The disciples were frightened as well, “The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” (v.25). Have you been there? A situation in life seems to be sinking your boat and there seems to be no solution and the waves seem to get higher. If you haven’t been there and you live long enough you will be there. But at least the disciples were smart enough to know where the answer was. May we also learn the lesson.

When the disciples woke Jesus up, “He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm,” (v.26). Very often in situations in life, common and otherwise, when there seems to be no solutions to our circumstances and it appears our boat is sinking we forget who is in the boat with us. Jesus is there, calm, cool and collected. Storms in the lives of believers are nothing new to Jesus and He really does have all the answers. But very often we seem to forget Jesus is in the boat with us. And we don’t have to wake Him up and we don’t have to wonder if He has the answer to our problems. His wisdom and His power can handle every situation, “The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him,’” (v.27). The winds and waves of life may threaten to sink our boat but we need to remember the kind of God we have and that He is in the boat with us and He will still the storms and things will be OK.
