JESUS ON PRAYER! There are countless books on prayer available today and I have read many of them. The internet is alive with information telling us how to pray and formulas for prayer. Seminars abound on prayer. We have prayer meetings, prayer chains, prayer conferences, prayer clothes, prayer lists, and sermons on prayer and Facebook is full of prayer promises. It appears people are sure that prayer is important but not quite clear on exactly how to pray or what form of prayer is really acceptable or fruitful. Could it be that all these things combine today to suppress prayer instead of promoting it because it sure seems like people and the church are praying less today instead of more.
Jesus talked a lot about prayer but there is one thing He said in the Gospel of Matthew that I think is really basic to every Christian’s prayer life. You don’t need a seminar, sermon, Google, Facebook, or a commentary to understand Jesus’ instruction on prayer from this text. Jesus said, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” (Matthew 6:6 NIV). Prayer could not get simpler than this. Just us and God alone in any place, face to face, heart to heart, child to Father, talking and listening together. Results guaranteed. Just do it.
