TOWNS & LAMPS; WHAT DO YOU AND THESE THINGS HAVE IN COMMON? Well according to Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount you and I as His disciples have a lot in common with these things at least in one area. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven,” (Matthew 5:12-16).
Since I grew up in East Tennessee I have seen a lot of hills which is quite unlike the flat South Florida where I live now. One of the things I remember growing up in Knoxville is that Knoxville has a lot of hills; some rather steep. As a boy on a bike it was not easy sometimes peddling up some of those steep hills but I can tell you going down the other side was a lot of fun. But I remember one place in Knoxville I lived on a pretty high hill and you could look out over the town and see several other hills and at night the hills were alive with lights of all kinds. You couldn’t hide them all if you tried; if the power went off the lamps and flashlights came out. And in the houses old fashioned lamps operating on oil were set out to light the house (yes I am that old).Towns on hills and their lights stand out. Like those towns and hills the Christians should stand out with their lights shining brightly for Jesus. In this spiritually dark and spiritually declining society Christians have to begin to shine instead of just blending in with the masses around us. Jesus says we can shine through our good deeds that glorify our Father in heaven. Today would be a good day to put that into practice.
