GOD USES “DIFFERENT” PEOPLE! Yes, He does! Very often society criticizes and ostracizes people who are “different” but very often in the Bible we find God often uses “different” people in great ways. That would be a great bible study for all of us. In the gospel of Matthew in chapter three we find a very “different” person marching to the forefront of Matthew’s narrative and he just happens to be a Preacher. He was called John the Baptist and he certainly didn’t wear a “Sunday Suit.” As Matthew reveals, “John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His daily diet was also a little different; “His food was locust and wild honey;” not exactly what the Religious Leaders of his day were consuming from their tables. And John had a different spiritual message as well as he proclaimed, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near,” (v.2 NIV.) John also took his portable podium to a different preaching place; not the pillars of Jerusalem but he was rather, “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths of him’,” (v.3 NIV). Now you would think this “different” person preaching in a “different” and out of the way place would have very few listeners but that was not the case with John. In fact Matthew tells us “People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan,” (v. 5,6 NIV).

It is true that God often uses “different” people for His purposes. Very often He uses them in great ways that are beyond human comprehension. I have to admit I don’t always understand why God chooses to use some of the people He does in order to expand the outreach of His Gospel and His Kingdom. Jesus said of this “different” person John the Baptist, “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist: yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he,” (Matthew 11:11 NIV). I suppose as Christians all of us are a “little different” from the rest of the general population or we would be in the majority instead of the minority. But even among Christians there are fellow believers who really are “different.” God is great to provide the body of Christ with such a diverse group of people just like he does in our individual families. Undoubtedly John the Baptist is a great figure in the history of the Kingdom but Jesus said, “whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” I am not sure I can fully comprehend that statement but I accept it and am thankful for it. All of us are “different” in some ways to others as we travel through life. That’s not a bad thing; it is a good thing if we realize that God loves all of us and wants to use us in His Kingdom work and in sharing His Gospel. When you see a “different” person don’t judge too quickly because God may have great plans for them.
