DO YOU HAVE TIME TO HEAR GOD? “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests,” (Luke 2:8-14 NIV).

If God was going to deliver an important message to people living on earth who would have thought that He would choose to give it to shepherds? Why these uneducated, poor, and often despised people? I mean this was a glorious event. As one person describes it, “Late on a sleepy, star-spangled night, those angels peeled back the sky just like you would tear open a sparkling Christmas present. Then, with light and joy pouring out of Heaven like water through a broken dam, they began to shout and sing the message that baby Jesus had been born. The world had a Savior. The angels called it “Good News” and it was.” (Larry Libby –“The Angels Called it Good News” in Christmas Stories for the Heart”)

So why the shepherds? Maybe if we look at the manger scene itself as described by Max Lucado we might get some idea about this. "Off to one side sits a group of shepherds. They sit silently on the floor, perhaps perplexed, perhaps in awe, no doubt in amazement. Their night watch had been interrupted by an explosion of light from heaven and a symphony of angels. God goes to those who have time to hear him"-- and so on this cloudless night he went to simple shepherds.” I like that, “God goes to those who have time to hear him.”

Who has time to hear from God during the Christmas season? People rush to and fro shopping, purchasing, planning, sending emails and Facebook posts to one another. Who has time to hear from God? Well, the season is about God and His Son. Christmas is really God’s love letter to the world wrapped up in a Christmas package called Jesus and delivered to a stable in Bethlehem. God spoke to the shepherds because they had time to hear Him. Do we have time to hear God today? Do we pause to open His Word and spend time listening to the message He has for us today? God still wants to deliver a message to those who have time to hear Him. Will that someone be you and me?
