THE CHRISTMAS TREE!

November 29, 2018

THE CHRISTMAS TREE! The time of year has arrived to put up the Christmas Tree in our home. I noticed that Christmas decorations were being advertised before Halloween this year in a lot of retail stores and that products abounded in variety in a mind boggling manner. I noticed on Facebook also that a lot of people had their Christmas trees up before Thanksgiving which seems a little odd to me but then I guess society has changed in my few short years on planet earth. I don’t care much for Halloween but I do like Thanksgiving season and the focus and reminder of how we need to be thankful people and give God thanks in a special way on Thanksgiving Day though I do think we should be thankful every day. So I like to keep Thanksgiving in its proper place and then begin to focus on the celebration of Christmas following Thanksgiving; however, I think Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday bring the wrong focus on Christmas. Christmas is not about stuff and money. It is about Jesus Christ, God’s gift to us. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth,” (Gospel of John 1:14 NIV).

As a dutiful servant of my wife I made at trip to the storage unit and brought forth our magnificent Christmas Tree purchased last year from our local Lowe’s store.  When it was assembled we stood back and admired it and somehow it wasn’t the same as when my father came through the door with a real tree from the neighborhood tree lot or when Millie and I packed our kids in the car and drove to the mountains to cut our own tree. Life does change. So then it was time to return to the storage unit and retrieve all the Christmas tree trimmings and decorations. When the items were packed in the car I realized for the first time how much additional space I seemed to have in the storage unit. Have we become hoarders? One section of our home now looks like someone came in during the night and trashed the place. But I am sure when Millie is finished today the tree will look beautiful and the room will be returned to its neat condition and we will both be “dog-tired.” That’s a Southern expression meaning we are on the verge of collapse. The Christmas season is a wonderful time of the year and we look forward to sharing it with family and friends and all the great special things about worshipping our Savior in special ways with music, programs, church services, and the variety of ways available today. It is also a time of gift-giving, ministry to widows, orphans, those in physical & material need, and in many other ways that God will reveal to us. So let the celebrating begin because, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders, And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV). Praise is to Jesus and may the Christmas Tree with its star on top remind us each day of the reason for the season and the true Light of the world.
