BLACK FRIDAY! Yes, in name it has come and gone but what I have discovered is that Black Friday actually began several weeks ago and it seems may last until after Christmas day. Has the world gone mad? Do words really have any meaning anymore? For instance it used to be, “A man’s word is his bond.” Now that doesn’t seem to mean anything in particular because it seems most people would say, “My word is my bond unless it isn’t convenient for me to keep it.” A politician will say prior to the election, “No new taxes,” and then the first thing they try to do is raise taxes. For those old enough to remember, President George H.W. Bush found that is not always a good way to operate. I suppose most of us have become skeptical of all the promises and warranties that abound in our society today. It is always good to read the “fine print” in all things in life anymore. Even “wedding vows” seem to mean very little anymore so now people have “pre-nuptial’ agreements just in case things don’t work out in the marriage.
The Apostle Paul reminds Christians how we must use our words even if others don’t follow the same values in life. Paul said, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor…” (Ephesians 4:25 NIV). Jesus reminded us that we should “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31 NIV). This would be a different world if everyone operated on these two principles. It amazes me that people are surprised when they meet an honest person. It appears, at least in the area where I now live, that lying is an accepted way of life for many people. Hopefully, for those of us who carry the name of Christ, we will be people of our word and the message of God we share will bring some light to a world that desperately needs it.
