TODAY WAS THE DAY! Yes fifty-nine years ago today I married the most beautiful lady in the world. I loved her from the time I first saw her when I was twelve years old and in the seventh grade. Millie didn’t even know I existed at the age of twelve. Though I was generous to her family in throwing free newspapers on their porch every day for quite a while I discovered later she had no idea I did that. My love was expensive and without any returns. Puppy love drives a young boy to do strange things. But God is good and eventually brought us together. At the age of eighteen I married Millie and meant it when I said “until death do us part.” Neither of us believes in divorce but I think my beloved considered the option of murder a time or two. As usual her kind, loving, considerate nature won out; that and the fact she knew there were not any others of such quality to choose from. That’s only a logical conclusion on my part. I am sure the thought of jail time was never considered in her decision.
So here we are fifty-nine years later with two children, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. We should have more great grandchildren but our grandchildren are really letting us down. Together Millie and I have lived through service in the Marine Corps, college, seminary, decades of Pastoring churches and being missionaries in the U.S. and the Caribbean. We have been through depression, oppression, plenty, want, sickness, health, and just about all the chapters and episodes in life that one can experience except death and still I love Millie more today than ever before. It is true we have grown from young people in love to mature experienced people in life but still loving one another. “Mature experienced” is much better than saying “old people.” Neither of us is just like we were in the beginning of our walk through life together. God and life have changed us and allowed our love to grow in ways we never imagined. I am still married to the most beautiful lady in the world; beautiful on the inside and on the outside. Every man should be as fortunate as I have been in sharing life with someone like Millie. The writer of the book of Proverbs said, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies,” (Proverbs 31:10 NIV). On this fifty-ninth wedding anniversary I am a very rich man to have a wife of great noble character who loves God and her family with all her heart. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
