THANKSGIVING! This is Thanksgiving week on the American calendar but every Christian knows that every day should be a day of giving thanks to our great God for His many blessings and His daily care for us. In America we do make every fourth Thursday of November in each year a special day of celebration on the holiday calendar for all people in America. Christians may celebrate the event with special church services or it may be a time of family dinners or celebrations for all people, Christians and non-Christians alike. Many will celebrate the day at sporting events or by viewing these events on TV. There will be the usual Christmas parades and the Black Friday sales which now extend for weeks it seems. Others will take mini-vacations to celebrate this special holiday. And people will jam the highways and airways in order to be with friends and family at this time. It is a special time of year and we should rejoice in it. Millie and I will be hosting some of our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and our son for a Thanksgiving dinner and we are thankful for the opportunity. Except for God’s care and grace this Thanksgiving could be totally different.
Many in our American family will be busy this Thanksgiving serving in our military and other professions providing critical service in our fire and police departments, guarding our borders, serving in our hospitals and in many other jobs and professions that make life better for all of us. We thank God for these people and their sacrifices so that the rest of us can enjoy this special time of year. May these words from Psalm 100 be our words of praise and thankfulness to God this day as we thank Him for this special time of year and His goodness to us, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God, It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever, his faithfulness continues through all generations,” (Psalm 100:1-5 NIV).
