GARAGE SALES, THE BIBLE AND POLITICIANS! What do these things have in common? Garage sales are usually fun for those buying but can also be hard work for those selling items. I say this from being an indentured servant for many years in our family garage sales. But at garage sales there are usually a multitude of many varieties of household items some of which are often useful and very cheap in price. A lot of items are just junk. But you know what they say, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” You do meet some interesting people at garage sales and most of the sales can be a lot of fun and very often it is a place where you meet your neighbors for the first time.
The Bible however is very serious book because it is the Word of God given to man to reveal the truth about God, creation, man, earthly life and eternity among other subjects. A variety of topics to be sure and some see the book as junk but for others of us we see it as God’s treasure given to all mankind. At a garage sale you can take the items for sale or just leave them where you find them and your life will probably not be affected in any way. The same is not true regarding the Word of God. If you decide to accept the Bible as God’s Word and accept the revelation of the Word regarding Jesus as the Savior of the world and your personal Savior and you apply the principles of the bible to your life your life will be changed for eternity. A garage sale is temporary and can be fun and financially profitable but the Bible is serious business and will produce eternal results. At a garage sale you can pick and choose the items you want without much effect on your life but with the Bible picking and choosing parts to accept and reject can bring catastrophic results.
What does all this have to do with Politicians? I am really tired of Politicians (Democrats, Republicans, Independents) using the Bible to try and support their political beliefs but in reality they prove their biblical ignorance. The Politicians treat the Bible like a garage sale. They pick and choose Bible verses that may appear to be “household” items that will improve the appearance or function of their “house” (party). It is a cheap way to get what they want. After all who is going to fight against the words of Jesus? But these politicians fail to incorporate the entire Bible into their system of beliefs (if they really have any beliefs). They need to incorporate all the Biblical principles into their belief system instead of being Bible verse “throwers”. There is probably nothing worse on TV than seeing two politicians or commentators arguing over what Jesus said when it is clear they have no concept of true biblical principles. May God have mercy on us and save us from Garage Sale Politicians. As Christians we need to study all of God’s Word and then we need to do what James said, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says,” (James 1:22 NIV).
