QUESTIONS? There are some questions in life that don’t get answered to our satisfaction. Why does a person mail bombs to political enemies? Why does a person go to a synagogue and murder eleven people? Why does a person walk into a school and murder innocent children? Most of us will never be satisfied with the answers given to us in those cases. Some questions in life are just annoying. Some are unnecessary. Some are really important like, “If I drink this will it really kill me?” The answer to some questions is self-evident and can affect us for eternity. In the bible book of Hebrews we have a really great and important question and how we respond to it does affect us for eternity.
“How shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will,” (Hebrews 2:3-4 NIV). The answer to that question should be self-evident. If we ignore God’s message of salvation delivered to us by Jesus and confirmed to us by His death on the cross and His resurrection there is no escape from God’s judgment. If we ignore the message preached to us by the Apostles there is no escape from God’s judgment. If we ignore all the signs, wonders, and miracles wrought by God to authenticate the salvation offered through Jesus there is no escape from God’s judgment. If we ignore the message brought to us by the works of the Holy Spirit there is no escape from God’s judgment. Indeed, “How shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?”
As you read through the bible you discover time and time again that people ignore God’s messages and warnings. And you read about the tragic results that occur. The bible says in numerous places that Jesus is the only way to God based on His provision of salvation through His death, burial and resurrection. No one can ignore “so great a salvation” and expect to escape the ultimate judgment of God. Yes there are great questions in life. And sometimes we never arrive at the answer to those questions. But in this case God has provided the question and the answer. Now the question is, “What will you do with the salvation God offers to you, me, and everyone else?” “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life,” (John 3:16 NIV).
