EXAMINE YOURSELVES! We live in a society that likes to examine other people but very rarely do people take time to examine themselves. I have noticed this more acutely recently in the political realm. Politicians post ads degrading their opponents but most do not examine themselves and post ads about what their exam of themselves would reveal. I have also noticed this in doctor’s offices recently. They like to exam the patient, poke them, run all kinds of tests on them, and ad infinitum but it appears they very seldom examine the practices of their own front office relating to timely visits, waiting times, billing, personnel, and many other things. And very often people like me forget to run spell check on things they write and end up with errors in their post. I also think people who call themselves Christians often fail to examine themselves as well. The Apostle Paul said, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless of course, you fail the test?” (2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV). A lot of things in life are not really important but certainly it is important whether you are a Christian or not. Where you spend eternity depends on the answer to the test of whether you are in the faith or not.
The bible is clear, “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,” (Titus 3:5 ESV). One of the problems people have in self-examination is common to mankind as noted in the book of Jeremiah, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9 ESV). I think the test is rather simple as stated in God’s Word, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so no one can boast,” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV). As the Apostle Paul said, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” (Romans 10:13 NIV). God’s plan is a pathway to heaven through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well,” (Gospel of John 14:6-7 NIV). Examinations are important. It is also important to pass the spiritual test. Do you pass the faith test as presented in the Bible?
