DESTROYED!

October 13, 2018

DESTROYED! When I see the images on TV and Facebook of the destruction caused by hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle where Millie and I used to live I am very saddened. Places and structures that were very familiar no longer exist or are extremely damaged or are beyond repair. Lives have been lost, many people injured, many people are missing and some may never be accounted for. Things have changed forever and in the aftermath some people will be affected in ways from which they will never recover. Other people will adjust and move on in life with plans altered; some for the worst and some for the better. I thank God for the compassionate people rushing in to help those affected by this disaster and also for those who give of their material possessions to alleviate the pain of those in need. Certainly our prayers are needed for all those who have been caught up in the destructive path of Michael’s tragic visit to the United States and this event should cause each of us to evaluate our own lives and realize how short life can be and how it is possible for anyone, Christian and non-Christian, to be caught up in the major tragedies of life.

While major weather events, like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wild fires, cause us to focus on destructive forces in life we should not forget that destructive forces are all around us in our daily lives that cause much more chaos and loss of life and destruction of families than these weather events. The results of drug abuse, drunk driving, crime, murders, physical & sexual abuse, divorce, abortion, riots and a multitude of other things in life bring death and destruction way beyond the results of the weather events. These things continue 24/7/365 and on a continuum cause far more damage than hurricane Michael. Buildings can be replaced and material possessions can be regained in one form or another but the lives of millions of people ruined by the destructive forces of sin can only truly be restored when a relationship with God is established through the forgiveness and love brought through the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,” (Acts 3:19 NIV). In the aftermath of hurricanes sometimes the former building just needs to be scraped off its foundation and a new building built. In life we also need to get rid of sins through repentance so that a new spiritual structure can be built and times of refreshing come from God.
