DOORS CAN BE CONFUSING! Our former home in Panama City Beach was built a little odd but we loved it. When you faced it from the street it looked normal but as you went down the driveway you noticed that it had three doors on the side of the house from the front of the house to the back of the house. One door went into the living room of our house, one into the kitchen, and one in to the back bedroom of our house. There were several reasons for this as the house began as a beach summer home and then had several expansions over the years. It is a nice home but the door layout was a little different. I have also noticed that doors leading into buildings can sometimes be a little confusing particularly if you have never been inside the building before. Enter the wrong door at some hospitals and you may spend the rest of your life getting out. And if you take the wrong door at an Alzheimer’s unit you may never get out. After all who would believe you just took a wrong door? May I say that entering the right door is important?
Jesus had a discussion on doors with the religious people of His day using the illustration of a sheep pen which should have been easy enough since the sheep pen only had one door (or gate) and sheep pens were pretty common in those days. The whole discussion shows you that people can be religious but still not grasp spiritual truth. The Pharisees were such a group of people. They were religious leaders but could not understand the spiritual truths Jesus was sharing with them as is stated in the text, “but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them,” (John 10:6 NIV). You can read the entire discussion in the Gospel of John chapter 10. Jesus drives home this point about the only door to heaven, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture,” (John 10:7-9 NIV). Jesus did not offer options for gates. There is one and He is THE ONE. There are many religious leaders around today presenting many doors as the way to God. They profess to have spiritual insights but they lack any true spiritual comprehension just like the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. Don’t let the doors of these misguided religious leaders confuse you. Choose the right and only door. It is Jesus.
