A CLOGGED LINE! When the weather is hot and humid in Florida, which is most of the time, the residents love their air conditioning. In fact without it our population would be greatly diminished and land values extremely low. Air conditioning can be expensive to purchase when you consider the cost of the units, installation, maintenance, and the cost of electric power to run them. But what would life be without it? Sometimes the smallest things can cause our A/C units to stop working; like a clogged drain line. And you know that never happens when things are cool…oh no, it is always when it is hot, hot, hot! When the house heats up you know you have a problem. Right away you begin to check the thermostat, the breaker box, the unit itself, and then you discover the drain line is clogged. I have been pouring vinegar and Clorox down the drain line on a regular basis so this should not happen. But don’t underestimate the power of mold and mildew in an A/C drain line in Florida. After checking U-Tube my son and I decided to hook the shop vac up to the end of the drain line and suck everything out of the line. It worked like a charm. Score one for U-tube. Cool homes are nice in September in Florida! God is good.
As I think about A/C and God and me I am reminded that our Christian life can often be like A/C units. We have all the equipment: salvation experience, the Holy Spirit’s presence, all the promises of God, all the power to do what is right, and the power line of prayer. But often our line to operate successfully in this world is clogged. The clog can be gigantic or it can be very “small” like mold and mildew. The clog can grow in enclosed places like mold and mildew in a drain pipe; places like the heart and mind. Though our spiritual clog often cannot be seen by others it is still there and God knows it is there and it can make us totally ineffective and inoperative for God. God once said to the prophet Samuel concerning David, “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart,” (1 Samuel 16:7 NKJV). Appearances can be deceiving and we can look good to the world (like David’s brother) but how about the line to God known as the heart? If we are to bring spiritual refreshment to ourselves and to those around us we need to keep the spiritual line open and free of clogs (sin). Try this remedy if you have a clogged line, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness,” (1 John 1:9 NIV).
