SOMEONE REALLY IS OUT TO GET YOU! I have heard it over and over in my lifetime, “So and so is out to get me.” Sometimes the people that say this are paranoid! As some would define it they are, “unreasonably, or obsessively anxious, suspicious or mistrustful.” But often they are right! All of us should understand that someone really is out to get us. The Apostle Peter said, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour,” (1 Peter 5:8 NIV). You do remember that person, don’t you? He is a busy and noisy being who is always looking for a meal and he is vicious and deadly. But we don’t want to be paranoid about the devil’s presence; we just want to be aware of it so we can take the necessary precautions. Sometimes people focus so much on this being, the devil, that they forget to focus on the presence of God. As Christians we should remember that the devil uses his followers, (who may be knowingly or unknowingly following the devil), to attempt to “devour” us and we should also remember that, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world,” (1 John 4:4 NIV).
In this busy world we can get so wrapped up in our daily life and daily problems that we often concentrate on the people who appear to be causing the problems rather than on the real cause of the problem. As we say, “This is just human nature.” I am sure the devil enjoys our displays of “human nature.” The Apostle Paul encourages us to, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand,” (Ephesians 610-13 NIV). I don’t know about you but I have had to believe and rely this past week on what Peter and Paul told us about where our real battles are. It is possible to focus so much on the failures of other people that cause us a lot of trouble that we forget who the real culprit may be. Someone really is out to get us but be assured the ultimate victory is ours through Christ Jesus. This week when the roaring lion appears let us use the armor God has given us to stand our ground and have the victory God has provided for us.
