DISHONESTY! This has always been a problem in the world and the very first humans were essentially dishonest people way back in the Garden of Eden. Moses testified to the problem in the Ten Commandments particularly when God told him to record the Commandments, “You shall not steal,” and “You shall not give false testimony.” Down through history dishonesty has always been a problem in society and dishonesty has caused the destruction of persons and societies. Today dishonesty runs rampant in our society. For many it is just the accepted form of doing business or conducting their daily lives. There was a time in America when it was said that a “man’s word was his bond.” If that time ever really existed I believe for most people that time has come and gone. The real axiom today is, “Buyer beware.” This is true in business dealings and unfortunately it is true in personal relationships. As we watch history unfolding before us today as recorded in the media let us beware. Every day it seems dishonesty is revealed not only among our political leaders and associates but also among the media who records the events and among the investigators who are supposed to be rooting out dishonesty.

God is clear in His Word how all of us should live our lives in honesty in every area of life. Jesus said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31). Because of our relationship to Jesus, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body” (Ephesians 4:25). The Apostle Paul said, “Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices” (Colossians 3:9). God is clear on what He thinks of dishonest people, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy” (Proverbs 12:22).

I must admit it is difficult at times to be honest in a dishonest world but God calls us to be truthful even when it is difficult. There are no “little white lies.” There is honesty and dishonesty and they stand in sharp contrast with each other. I must also admit I have been sadly disappointed recently by valued and trusted people in Christian ministry who have proven themselves to be dishonest. Sometimes the truth is hard to discern and we just have to trust God to take care of the situation but God’s Word reminds us, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out” (Proverbs 10:9). Even if the world around us is dishonest let us as Christians attempt to be honest in all our ways and in all our dealings with those around us so that we are not ashamed to represent the Lord Jesus Christ at all times.
