INSOMNIA! Do you have a tough time sleeping? Maybe you have insomnia. Insomnia is defined as “habitual sleeplessness; inability to sleep.” Some synonyms would be sleeplessness, wakefulness, and restlessness. I have observed many people during the Pastor’s sermon at church proving to all around that they did not have insomnia. A number of people have suggested that when you have insomnia you should practice praying as you lie in bed or maybe as you sit in church and that will help you go to sleep. Others suggest that you read certain bible verses because you obviously are worrying about things. Judgmental? Maybe. Now I have to say I do not have insomnia but sometimes I do have things on my mind that cause me to rise from a bed where I am obviously not going to go to sleep for a while. And these occasions are not because I am worried but occasions when I am trying to solve problems, seek God’s wisdom, and/or get God’s insight and direction. Sometimes that is when there is total quiet around me and no distractions to disturb me. That very seldom happens during the daytime.
I had a night like that last night. Several things kept my brain going; my wife would say that alone is a miracle but I discount her conclusions on that matter. As you read the Bible you will find people who were up late at night; men like Nebuchadnezzar, King Xerxes, and King David. In Psalm 63 David says, “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me,” (Psalm 63:6-8 NIV). This was a tough time for David but he filled his time fellowshipping with God unlike King Xerxes who “ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him,” (Esther 6:1 NIV). During my time last night I discovered things I did not know that will help me to reach conclusions and direction for the future in some serious matters. But I am thankful I do not have insomnia and usually sleep very sound and awake very early ready for another day. If you do have insomnia I trust you will find those hours awake at night fruitful much like David did and my prayer for you is that you will not have to turn to a history book of your life in order to get to sleep.
