THE TRUTH! DOES IT MATTER ANYMORE? Of course it does but it seems lying permeates our society. Maybe it always has and I just didn’t recognize it. I admit I am not the brightest light in the room. This morning, with the political season once again upon us, I am reminded that “truth” is a nebulous thing with many people. As I passed the public library driveway yesterday I was startled with what seemed like hundreds of yard-type signs advertising the political hopes of many individuals running for public office. They were not there one day and the next day they covered the library property like locusts sent to Egypt. All of these individuals may be honest people wanting to serve the public in an honest way but I have my doubts. The news media has been full recently of candidates for public office who have been legitimately exposed as lying over academic degrees, personal lives (abuse of all kinds), theft, and the list goes on. And may I say the news media has been proven not to be exactly honest these days either. But I can’t give religious people a pass in this conversation either because recently many of the religious leaders of major churches and organization have been exposed as less than truthful as well.
The truth is important in all things but surely those who profess to be Jesus Christ followers should be proven to be truthful people. Alas, that is not always the case and I must admit we are all sinners and open to failure in our lives but the proven track record of a Christian should be that of truthfulness and honest character. “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy,” (Proverbs 12:22). The Apostle Paul also reminds us of how our Christian character should be, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor…,” (Ephesians 4:25). Lying may have been a characteristic of our life before we knew Christ but now life should be different and we should be people of truth. But whether we are speaking of Christians or non-Christians this is true, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy, “(Proverbs 12:22). Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 NIV). Those of us who love and serve “The Truth,” Jesus Christ, should strive to let His truth live through us because “The Truth” does matter and our living a life of the truth matters as well. And may God help all of us to wade through the political signs and morass of media during this election cycle and find some honest people to serve our generation.
