GOD’S PROMISES! I like the promises of God because I know He is faithful and just to keep all His promises. I know this because of His written Word, the Bible, and I know it by personal experience. So I look forward to God fulfilling all the promises He has made to me and every other believer in Christ and I fear for those who don’t know Christ because He has made some promises to them that they will wish He would not have made.
The Apostle Peter reminds us that Christians receive their faith through the “righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:1); our faith is not based on our own righteousness or works but it is based on what and who Jesus is and what He has done for us on the cross. As Peter said, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his glory and goodness,” (2 Peter 1:3 NIV). It is through His glory and power that “He has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires,” (2 Peter 1:4 NIV). Everything we need to live for God and serve God in this world is provided by God and that is a promise from God.
The Apostle Peter follows his statement on these things with this admonition and a GREAT PROMISE, “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love,” (2 Peter 1:5-7 NIV). Now here is the promise, “For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ,” (2 Peter 1:8 NIV). A lot of people know a lot of things about Jesus but are yet ineffective and unproductive for God. You don’t have to be perfect in your knowledge of Jesus BUT to be effective and productive for Jesus you need to be increasingly incorporating in to your life and growing in the measure of the listed qualities in your life. THAT IS A GREAT PROMISE OF GOD! I don’t know about you but I want to always be effective and productive for Jesus while I live this life on planet earth so I need to continually be working on growing in the measure of these qualities in my life.
