PEOPLE WHO SURROUND US! It becomes more apparent to me as I grow older that the world thinks it is getting smarter but I really think what is happening is that we are dumbing down society to a large degree. There are really smart people all around us but very often it appears to me that in every segment of society these people often surround themselves with less than competent people or at least people who aren’t motived to do their best job at what they are supposed to do. So the really smart people are limited in what they accomplish by the people who surround them and do less than their best. I will not detail any one segment of life because you know what I mean and you can fill in the details from your own life experience. But failures on the part of people who surround us in every area of society can make life difficult for all of us; and I must say I think the government causes a lot of the failures through its social engineering policies.
All this leads me to think about the people we as Christians surround ourselves with. I am thankful God has placed in my life many godly dedicated people who strive to love and serve God to the best of their abilities. They have and are presently making a profound impact on my life and are helping me and challenging me to do my best to honor and serve God. And unfortunately there are some people in my life like the ones noted above who fail to live up to their potential and they make negative impacts on others. The bible says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm,” (Proverbs 13:20 NIV). And again, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” (Proverbs 27:17 NIV). Hopefully the smart people of the world will sharpen those who surround them as time moves on. But for us as Christians we can work on ourselves so that we surround ourselves in our walk with God with people who help to improve our walk and sharpen us in our relationships with God and others. It does make a difference in your life as to who you surround yourself with and one of the outcomes can be that we develop friends “that love at all times” (Proverbs 17:17 NIV) and lift us up instead of “dumbing us down.”
