ENTHUSIASM FOR LIFE! My youngest granddaughter is in town to visit her father so we are delighted to spend a little time with her. She will begin her third year of college in the Fall and she has grown into a very beautiful young lady, with a great personality, and many plans in preparing for life. During this week though she just wants to have a good time enjoying the activities of South Florida and visiting with her father, her cousins, and the rest of the family here. So Millie and I were delighted when she visited Millie at the rehab center yesterday a few short hours after arriving in town.
Rehab centers (i.e. skilled nursing facilities) in South Florida are filled with “older” people with short and long-term problems. When younger people visit them a sharp contrast is drawn in life by their very presence. The enthusiasm for life by young people and the battered dreams and hopes of older people are in sharp contrast. Hopefully the work of the staff and the “grit” of the patients will work to help many of these older patients to regain a spark of enthusiasm for life whatever time in life remains for them. And hopefully as younger people visit these facilities they will be reminded to use the time in life that God gives them to do something productive in life that will have lasting effects.
In the Bible King Solomon gives us this advice, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them,’” (Ecclesiastes 12:1 NIV). I am no longer young by man’s standards but at this time I am healthy, for my age, and I am still enthusiastic for life but I am glad I have spent the majority of my life remembering and serving my Creator and Savior the Lord Jesus Christ. And every once in a while a person like my granddaughter comes by with enthusiasm for life that reminds me to continue that enthusiasm while I still can. How about you?
