HONOR TO WHOM HONOR BELONGS! Honor as a noun carries the thought of “high respect or esteem, or privilege.” As a verb honor has the thought of regarding someone with great respect or the thought of fulfilling an obligation or keeping an agreement. Jesus said, “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (John 12:26 NIV). The context of this verse is speaking of the future. In the future we will be with Jesus in heaven. In the future we will be honored for our service in God’s kingdom because we serve Jesus today. What we do in daily life here on earth to serve Jesus does affect our life in eternity and our service for Jesus also affects the lives of those around us today.

As a Christian you probably will not be honored by those around you for your service to Jesus today. The Apostle Paul reminds us of the reality of our relationship with Jesus and with people. “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10 NIV). It is through being a servant of Jesus today that honor comes in the future. All of this should encourage us to follow Paul’s admonition, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3:23 NIV). Honor will come to those to whom it belongs in the future not necessarily today.
