TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST BE COMPASSIONATE AND LOVING!
TO BE A TRUE SERVANT OF GOD WE MUST BE COMPASSIONATE AND LOVING. “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:1-4 NIV).
Why should we be compassionate and loving to others? Paul stresses that we don’t act this way just to make ourselves look good before others or just to get things from others. But rather we should be compassionate and loving because Jesus was compassionate and loving and now we have His nature so that same nature should be displayed in us. Jesus served people with compassionate and love. The gospels tell us that this was His relationship with all: the crowds, the physically infirm, the sinful like the woman caught in adultery, the prostitutes, the tax collectors, the rich & powerful but lost, the spiritual leaders and the thief on the cross. Jesus was a servant-leader who insists that we follow His style of discipleship.
Walter C. Jackson, a professor at Campbellsville University says, “Servant leadership, as portrayed in the gospels, is difficult to maintain in a climate where increasingly larger segments of the Christian population prefer ‘super-leader’ styles.” Jackson is right to a large extent. We have become a generation of “hire it done Christians.” We want someone else to deal with the masses and all their problems rather than each one of us Christians getting in the trenches and serving the people around us who are so entrenched in sin. The world misses the salvation message of Jesus for the most part BUT the world understands the message Jesus gives through the compassion and love He demonstrated. How are we doing as servants of the Lord Jesus Christ in ministering to the people around us?
