THE WORD OF GOD…REALLY? We noted in our reflection on God’s Word yesterday how important it was to read and apply what we do understand of God’s Word so we may read and understand even more of God’s Word. And we also noted that 2 Timothy 3:16 and 2 Peter 1:20-21 reveals to us that the Bible, God’s Word, comes from God Himself. But some will ask how do we know that for sure? Let me just offer a few simple quotes in answer to that question. Dr. Kent, former President of Grace Theological Seminary and one of the foremost Greek scholars of our day had this to say about the Scriptures as noted here, “Since only the Old Testament was complete at this time, Paul’s reference must be primarily to it, but the qualitative emphasis leaves room for the New Testament to be considered by later Christians as within the scope of this assertion.” In other words both the Old and New Testaments are declared by God to be His Word. As some would say, “God said it, I believe it, that is good enough for me.”
However, Gleason Archer & Dan Story in “Defend Your Faith: How to Answer Tough Questions”, page 35, had this to say about the reliability of our Bible: "Even though the two copies of Isaiah discovered in Qumran Cave 1 near the Dead Sea in 1947 were a thousand years earlier than the oldest dated manuscript previously known (A.D. 980), they proved to be word for word identical with our standard Hebrew Bible in more than 95 percent of the text. The 5 percent variation consisted chiefly of obvious slips of the pen and variations in spelling." In other words, basically all the copies of the earliest pieces of the Bible that we find agree with each other confirming that what we have today is God’s Word.
Josh McDowell said, “What archaeology has done is to verify some of the history contained in the Bible. For instance, two of the cities mentioned in the Bible, Sodom and Gomorrah, have been for many years considered mythological by the intellectual community. However, recent excavations at Tell Mardikh, now known to be the site of Ebla, uncovered about 15,000 tablets. Some of these have been translated, and mention is made of Sodom and Gomorrah" (Greg Johnson and Michael Ross, How To Geek Proof Your Faith, 50). The bible is God’s Word. The book we have in our hands AND the book the Gideons distribute around the world has its origins in God Himself. What better guidelines for living can we have than this book? And what better place can we go to than this book to discover the beginning and the end of God’s plan for planet earth and its occupants?
