THE OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD: REALITIES TO ACKNOWLEDGE!

April 12, 2018

THE OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD: REALITIES TO ACKNOWLEDGE. “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7 NIV). Here are two penetrating questions that face all of us. Have you ever just wanted to get away from it all? Just take a vacation or just catch a break. No phones. No radio. No TV. No people. No Facebook. You can do it. It’s hard but you can do it. But where do you go to get away from God? Since God is Omnipresent where do you go to get away from Him?  Do you travel by car, bus, train, plane or ship to get away from God? Do you climb the highest mountain or dive in the deepest sea?  David answers these two questions for us.

God shares three penetrating answers to these questions that David poses. We will notice two today and one more tomorrow.  “If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there” (Psalm 139:8 NIV). Death cannot hide us from God.  You cannot escape God in heaven and you cannot escape God in hell. Space simply cannot hide you from God. You can go to the farthest part of the universe but you will not escape God. You can go to the lowest depths of hell but you cannot escape God. And the fact you may not believe in heaven or hell doesn’t help you either. In Luke chapter 16 we have the account of Lazarus and the rich man. Both died. Both went to their place of just reward. The rich man went to sheol or hell and Lazarus went to paradise or the equivalent of heaven. Death will take us out of this world whether we are righteous or unrighteous but it will not help us to hide from God. God is Omnipresent.

“If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast,” (Psalm 139:9-10 NIV). Distance cannot hide us from God.  In human terminology as far East as you can go, where the sun comes up, or as far West as you can go, where the sun sets, you cannot hide from God. It doesn’t make any difference whether you are on land or sea you cannot hide from God. It doesn’t make any difference whether you are in the fastest  jet or car you cannot speed away from God. The prophet Jonah was called by God to preach in the city of Nineveh. And Jonah decided to put some distance between himself and God. He went to Joppa and caught a boat bound for Tarshish. And you know the rest of the story. As he sat in the belly of the great fish on the bottom of the ocean he decided that you just cannot hide from God no matter how much distance you try to put between yourself and God. How often we are like Jonah. We try to find ways to hide from God. After all I am only one among 8 billion people. Why would God even notice I am missing? So we go missing from God’s house, or from God’s service or from our daily quiet time with God and we think God doesn’t notice. Well we need to be aware that God noticed Jonah and God notices us because God is Omnipresent. More on this topic tomorrow.
