MAN MADE DANGERS TO AVOID!

April 9, 2018

MANMADE DANGERS TO AVOID IN THE STUDY OF GOD’S OMNIPRESENCE! There are three basic dangerous fallacies of human reasoning we need to be alert to as we reflect on God’s Omnipresence in Psalm 139:7-12. The first of these is Pantheism. What is “pantheism?” The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy describes Pantheism this way: “Pantheism is a metaphysical and religious position. Broadly defined it is the view that… "God is everything and everything is God … the world is either identical with God or in some way a self-expression of his nature" … A slightly more specific definition is … "‘Pantheism’ … signifies the belief that every existing entity is, only one Being; and that all other forms of reality are either modes (or appearances) of it or identical with it."

In other words, God is just an impersonal force in the universe. “God is everything and everything is God.” We are all just one with God and so our bodies on this earth are in reality just appearances of this great impersonal force of the universe. “As man is only a mode of God’s existence, his acts are the acts of God, and as the acts of God are necessary, it follows that there can be no freedom of the will in man. All our activity is only a temporary manifestation of the activity of God. All our acts are his acts.” When we die, we die. There is no afterlife.

As some of the online sites state it, “The essence of Pantheism is a profound reverence for Nature and the wider Universe and awed recognition of their power, beauty and mystery. From this feeling flows the desire to make the most of our present life in our bodies on this earth, to care for nature, and to respect the rights of humans and animals in general.” And this line of thought produces people like Shirley McClaine & Orphah Winfrey, the animal rights movement and the mystic religions. “God is everything…and everything is God.”

By God’s grace and mercy God has given us the written Word of God to free us from such human reasoning. Man left to himself will reduce God to nothing more than some kind of mystical force that allows man to live without personal accountability for his thoughts, words, or actions and to just enjoy and worship the world we live in. But God’s Word says, “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” (Hebrews 9:27-28 NIV). Beware of Pantheism and those who promote it in this age by many veiled methods. God being Omnipresent is different  than Pantheism. Tomorrow we reflect on the dangers and fallacies of Deism/Unitarianism.
