BLESSED HOPE-IMPACT NOW! What impact should the Blessed Hope have on our lives now? If we know all the things we have talked about concerning the Blessed Hope how should that impact us now? Why has God made us aware of this great hope? How should we respond to what God has revealed to us? The Apostle Paul gave the young preacher Titus some advice concerning this doctrine of the Blessed Hope (Titus 2:12-15 NIV). Paul says this Hope should cause us to refrain from wickedness, “It teaches us to say, ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions (v.12).” In contrast to wickedness Paul says the hope “teaches us to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age (v.12,14). There is no doubt about how the Christian should respond in this life as they wait for Jesus to appear.
The Christian obviously should live a godly life, abstain from sin, and be self-controlled and this in a world that seems to have lost all self-control. But with the Holy Spirit living in us and God’s hope for now and the future residing with us this kind of life can be lived in present times. In addition the Apostle Paul reminds the Christian that while we operate this way in the world because we are God’s people (v.14) God has redeemed us and purified us also so that we are “eager to do what is good” (v.14). The Christian should be an example of goodness to other people. We are not saved by our works but certainly our salvation should be reflected in our good life style and the good things we do. And that good is defined by God’s standard not man’s standard. And God has redeemed us and purified us so that we can do this very thing.
Paul reminds Titus and us that these things are what we should be teaching during our time on earth, “These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you” (Titus 2:15).Whether we are a preacher, Elder, deacon, or a Christian with no official office in the Church the application of this verse should guide us. Each of us has an area of influence in this world. People are watching and listening. While we wait for the Blessed Hope event let us be busy living for Christ and sharing our Hope with others. And let us not be intimidated (despised) by anyone because God has issued the order and we need to carry that order out. It is time to stand up for God and declare His Blessed Hope BUT to do it in a godly manner.
