FAITHFUL MENTORS PRODUCE FAITHFUL RESULTS! “As Jehovah commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua: and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that Jehovah commanded Moses” (Joshua 11:15 ASV). Moses mentored Joshua, who was forty years younger than him, for forty years. Together they led these millions of Jews and other ragtag people through the desert areas for forty years. Together they fought battles of war, fatigue, complaining crowds, and adherence to God who demanded strict obedience to His Word. Joshua traveled with Moses day and night observing his life and obedience to God. And yes he saw the best of Moses and the worse of Moses. But in the end God, on Moses’ death, invested in Joshua the leadership position and authority that Moses once had. The mentor had produced in the life of Joshua the same faithfulness to God that he possessed.
When Joshua assumed leadership of the Jewish nation he continued the pattern of Moses, doing what God said to do. “So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that Jehovah spoke unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land had rest from war” (Joshua 11:23 ASV). In this case Moses the faithful mentor produced a follower who also produced faithful results. For those of us in the ministry of mentoring people there is no greater joy than to see those we have mentored continue to be faithful in following the Lord Jesus Christ for all their lives. Jesus said, “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher” (Gospel of Luke 6:40 NIV). We do need to be careful what we are teaching those around us and particularly those who are imitating our lives or being trained by us. It is possible to train people for evil as well as for good. And Satan is hard at work doing that and helping others to do that. It is no “accident” that the godly heritage of our educational institutions has been eroded and the influence of godly principles once inherent in our schools has been consistently in the process of being removed. Even some “Christian” institutions of higher learning that were once considered solidly committed to the inerrant Word of God have now begun to question just how inerrant the Word of God is. What kind of disciples will the teachers in those institutions be producing in the future?
Faithful mentors will produce faithful results! Thank God for all the modern day people who are like Joshua, following mentors who have faithfully instilled within them the principles of loving and serving the Lord Jesus Christ. As Christians we should be examining our lives to see the effect we have on others whom we influence in our daily lives. Mentoring is often more “monkey see, monkey do” than “I say, you do.” Let’s conclude with this thought, “Now Joshua was old and well stricken in years; and Jehovah said unto him, ‘Thou art old and well stricken in years, and there remains yet much land to be possessed” (Joshua 13:1 ASV). There are still many things to be done for God’s kingdom today. There will remain many things in life to be done for God’s kingdom when we die (if the Rapture doesn’t occur first). It was true with Joshua. It will be true for us. But we can help in advancing God’s kingdom even after we die if we are faithful in producing faithful disciples for God’s kingdom while we are alive. Be a faithful mentor who produces faithful results and faithful disciples.
