REAL LIFE VS HOLLYWOOD! The book of Genesis is filled with the names of people whose individual lifespan covered a hundred or more years. Such a person is Isaac whom the book of Genesis features in detail from the record of his birth in Genesis 21:1 until his death in Genesis 35:29. Isaac was a prominent man in history who lived 180 years and was the human channel, as Abraham’s son, to be chosen by God to carry on the legacy and promises God had given to Abraham. These promises were so rich they would bless the entire human race. The biblical account of Isaac from his amazing birth to the very end of his life reads like a script for a Hollywood movie. His life, and the people who are part of his family and life, feature a love story, family tension and conflict, lies, deceit, deception, territorial conflict, sexual sin, births, deaths, covenants with God and worship of God. Whoever thinks that the Bible is a boring book and all about “pie in the sky” simply hasn’t read the same bible I am reading. But I must admit that it helps to be a Christian who is indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit who can help us to understand God’s message to us in the book His Spirit has written.

Some people think the Old Testament is outdated and no longer relevant to our lives today. But God thinks differently. God has said that the events of the Old Testament are recorded for us as examples and for our admonition (1 Corinthians 10:6, 11). The Apostle Paul also reminds us that, “Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ASV). So to God the entire bible is the same from beginning to end. It is God’s word to man and each part of it, Old or New Testament, is there to benefit us. God reveals the godliness of people and the sinfulness of people. God does not “sugarcoat” the lives of His chosen people. Warts are warts and blemishes are blemishes. And we don’t always understand why God chooses to bless some and seemingly ignore others. But the reality is this; God has something to say to us from the beginning to the end of the Bible. His great plan for the universe and mankind are revealed. And God wants us to understand it. So dust off some of those passages like those found in Genesis and those dealing with people like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph and get ready for an exciting time of study. And remember that in addition to the written Word, God has also given us the living Word His Son the Lord Jesus Christ who came to live among us (John 1:14) to give us salvation and redeem us from our sins (John 3:16). And knowing Jesus helps us to understand the Old Testament even better.
