FOREIGN LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES ANYONE?
FOREIGN LANGUAGE DIFFICULTIES ANYONE? Some people just seem to be able to learn and speak any language. That is not the situation with me. Or maybe I am just too lazy to put in the effort to learn or maybe my brain just is not wired for it. Or maybe my ears are just bad. Quite frankly I have difficulties understanding some of the people who live in America and supposedly speak English. Since I was born in the South I suppose some people have problems with my speech as well. But I am blaming all my problems on our ancestors and their sins at the Tower of Babel because up to that time the Bible says language was easy for everyone, “Now the whole world had one language and a common speech” (Genesis 11:1 NIV).
You would think the human race would have learned some important lessons concerning God and their relationship with Him after the flood. But as we all know people are self-centered and want to be their own god or at least as good and important as God. So the Bible says after the flood people moved eastward and settled in the plain of Shinar. There is much discussion about the exact location of this area and the events to follow and I will leave that to your personal study. But in this location the people made some decisions and said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 11:4 NIV). Now there is much discussion over the purpose of the tower since it was obvious and the people smart enough to know that they could never reach heaven. Instead they would use it as a center of worship and a building up of themselves; i.e. “make a name for ourselves”, thus replacing God and His worship and authority. God had said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth” (Genesis 9:1 NIV). Man said we don’t want to “be scattered over the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 11:4 NIV).
In observing this God said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth’ (Genesis 11:6-9 NIV). God has a plan for us and we can choose to follow it or we can rebel against God and face His discipline or judgment. God’s plan is always better than our plan. We can attempt to build ourselves up in man’s eyes and be the ruling authority or we can choose to worship and exalt God and submit to His authority. One path leads to disaster and the other to God’s blessings. Obedience beats towers any day. Thanks to our ancestors we have language problems today and I know who to blame.
