WHAT’S IN A NAME? Does a name really mean anything? Think about a few names: McDonalds’s, Apple, Wendy’s, Facebook, Disney, Burger King, ATT, FOX NEWS, GOOGLE, & Jesus. As it turns out names do mean something. The names I just mentioned immediately carry messages to our mind about who they are and what they offer. And as insignificant or as great as we may think we are our name is important because it carries messages to the people who know us. What does your name say about you to those who know you? I know few facts about my grandfather on my father’s side of the family. The most important fact is what I have seen written on his tombstone. My grandfather died at an early age so I never had the opportunity to meet him but I do believe I will meet him in heaven one day. His tombstone read, “Charles Davis. He died as he lived believing in God.” He was a simple farmer living in Tennessee but his name and inscription says a lot about him. The bible tells us the importance of our names, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” (Proverbs 22:1 NIV) When I die I trust those who hear or have heard my name will think of a person of good character, who loved Jesus and had faith in Him.
Today you can plan what you want on your tombstone if you will have one. You can have it say great things about you or you can just have your name on it. You can actually go to your grave lying about yourself if you choose to. But the people who have known you will probably know the truth about the kind of person you are; and God will certainly know the kind of person you were as you walked planet earth. As you walk through life are you building a great name that reflects your relationship to God and your relationship to people? When people hear or see your name do they automatically think of a person of great character and trust or do some other thoughts come to mind for them? If we accumulate “great riches” such as “silver or gold” and yet do not have “a good name” where do we stand in God’s eyes and the eyes of those who know us? “The name of the righteous is used in blessings, but the name of the wicked will rot” so says Proverbs 10:7 NIV. That’s something to think about isn’t it?
The bible also says, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:3-4 NIV) And the writer of the book of Ecclesiastes says, “A good name is better than fine perfume.” (7:1 NIV) As Christians we need to realize that the way we live our lives, representing God and letting Him live through us, obeying His Word and the life principles found there, is much more important than accumulating the wealth of the world. Our very presence in the world should bring a “fine perfume” to a society that often resembles a garbage dump full of trash. When our world sees our love for them and God and the character we exhibit we will earn a good name and leave a good legacy. So “What’s In A Name?” It all depends on you.
