WHO IS IN CHARGE OF YOUR PLANS? Human beings like to plan. We plan our lives from birth to death. We plan vacations. We have building plans and we have marriage plans. And on it goes. Plans, plans, and more plans. But who is really in charge of your plans. In Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) it says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” We are reminded also about our tendencies in Proverbs 16:9 (NIV), “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Yes, we humans love to plan. But I wonder where God fits into most of our plans. How much time do we spend consulting God before we make our plans? We can make all the plans we want but it is God who decides the final outcome of our plans. And for that we can be thankful that, “the Lord establishes their steps.” God wants us to make plans in life but He also wants to be included in the plan-making.

In the New Testament we are also given some advice on planning by James. He said, “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a midst that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them” (James 4:13-17 NIV)

WOW! Is planning wrong? No! The point is that God should be consulted when you are making plans. Are your proposed plans in accordance with God’s revealed principles? Have you taken time to pray about them? And God is just as interested in our small plans as He is our grandiose plans. I could fill a book with examples of “my” plans that didn’t turn out exactly as I planned. Was I sinful in my plans? Did I not consult God? Not necessarily. The final outcome of plans when you commit them to the Lord will be that “He establishes your plans.” God’s ways are not always our ways. And God knows more than we do. We plan the best we can on the human wisdom we have or accumulate and when we submit that to God’s guidance through prayer God “establishes our steps.” However our plans turn out the fact is when God is our partner or guide in plan making the result will always be what God has mapped out for us. God intends good for us not evil. His ultimate plan is always best for us.
