THE COST OF SPREADING CHEER!
THE COST OF SPREADING CHEER. I don’t think anyone doubts that we reside in a world of people beset by anxiety. The pharmaceutical industry doesn’t doubt that and they make billions of dollars because of the medicines they produce to address the issue. Many people think they have a right to be anxious because of the mess this world is in; or least in their perceived condition of the world whether true or not. Think about it: global warming , hydrogen bombs, poisonous chemicals, food shortages, immigration , population explosion, health issues (always a new one), employment, political situations all over the world, and fill in your own list of things that may cause people to be anxious. Most of those things we can’t do anything about anyway and many of them are possibly untrue. In Proverbs 12:25 we read this truth, “Anxiety weights down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”
Simple solutions can often resolve or at least assist in dealing with the “anxiety disease” that has impacted our generation. Every day most of us will come in contact with anxious people. We may not know the underlying cause of their anxiety problem and we may not be able to resolve all the issues in life that have brought on their anxiety. But God has given us a way to at least bring temporary relief to the anxiety of friends and strangers alike: a kind word cheers up the heart of people. And unlike the cost of pharmaceutical products a kind word doesn’t cost us anything. So help lift the anxieties of people and share a kind word.
For Christians beset by anxiety the Apostle Paul offers this advice, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7 NIV) Jesus has not only brought us deliverance from our sin problem; He has also brought us a way to deal with our anxiety problems as well. A cheerful, peaceful heart is much better than an anxious heart. So Christians, let us practice what we preach today and take our anxious thoughts and hearts before the Lord in prayer. The difference in our lives will be seen by all. Cheers!
