WHAT DOES GOD HATE?

January 11, 2018

WHAT DOES GOD HATE? Yes, our God is a God of love. How great is that love? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV) On the other hand God is a God of purity and holiness and He actually hates some things. The book of Proverbs reveals some of God’s thoughts on this in these words, “There are six things the Lord hates, seven things that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” (Proverbs 6:16-19 NIV)

Even a casual look at our society today reveals that we are surrounded by people and society as a whole that reflects the description of those things noted above. Prideful and “haughty” people are everywhere around us marked by an attitude of superiority in looks, possessions or position. How often do you really see a humble entertainment personality, politician, rich person, or even a Christian? Lying is considered a way of life in our society; after all doesn’t everyone do it. And can a little “white lie” hurt anyone anyway? We also live in a society where “hands that shed innocent blood” are not only tolerated but also promoted by light punishment for crimes and where many people promote the shedding of innocent blood” in the form of abortion. And when in the history of our country have we seen so many people devising wicked schemes; just look at what is happening in the financial, political, medical, governmental, business, educational, and religious realms to name a few areas of our society. All of this promotes “feet that are quick to rush into evil;” after all doesn’t everyone want their fair share of the pie and most people get away with it anyway. All this leads up to what we see all around us, “a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” When most of the media in our country has a problem with reporting the truth and the streets are filled with “community organizers” stirring up trouble at every turn in the name of “social justice” instead of using a lawful justice system to right “perceived” wrongs I am sure God is more than a little disturbed by these events.

Now you might think from what I have said that I am pessimistic about our society today. I would rather like to think that I am just realistic about the conditions of our society today and God’s view concerning it. God is still in charge of the world, in contrast to what some people think, and God still hates sin in all forms. And God, in His Word, doesn’t hesitate to call sin “sin” and point it out to us. God still offers us the good news of Jesus Christ to share with a lost and dying world and usually one on one. Christians are still being placed in society to be “lights,” “salt,” and witnesses for God’s saving grace. And though society may get worse before Jesus returns to take total control we need to remember that the one living in us is greater than the evil one trying to take charge of God’s world. And while the world for the most part may be totally immersed in sins that God hates we need to remember that we do not have to live that way and there is a brotherhood of Christians that stand with us in lifting high the banner of the Lord and looking heavenward to a higher calling.
