GOD’S BLESSINGS IN 2018. I don’t know about you but I really do want God to bless me in 2018 and God’ Word tells me how that will be possible. The book of Psalms starts out with this advice, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who mediates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2 NIV) God’s blessings have a great deal to do with our time and people involvement. We can choose to invest most of our time with people who do not know God, practice ungodly things and literally mock God or we can follow God in ways that reflect His teachings from the Word of God. But to be able to discern the way to win the lost and walk the talk we need to be reading and meditating on God’s Word. That means more than just having a casual acquaintance with what the bible says.
God’s Word says that our fruitfulness for Him and so our blessings from Him come from knowing and practicing the teachings of His Word, “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” (Psalm 1:3 NIV) To win the lost we must spend time with the lost but it is from God we draw our strength and knowledge of God’s ways. It is in God we plant our roots that allow us to produce fruit and receive blessing. It is in the world and among the ungodly that we find Satan at work trying to uproot and corrupt us. While we must live IN the world we should be careful we do not live LIKE the world.
God’s Word reminds us of the contrast between the unsaved people of the world and the fruit and blessings of those who follow God, “Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.” (Psalm 1:4-6 NIV) I want God’s blessings in and on my life in 2018. How about you? I also realize my responsibility to those unsaved people around me and I realize I don’t reach them for Christ by becoming like them but rather by reflecting Christ while I am among them.
We recently purchased a robot vacuum cleaner which my son’s dog finds very amusing while it runs in every direction doing whatever it does. I am not sure about its value yet in doing its basic job but it does have one characteristic that is in common with smart Christians. To continue its work for us and be a blessing to us, when its power supply begins to run down, the robot runs back to its charging post. And if we are to be a blessing to God and others in 2018 and if we are to receive God’s greatest blessings to us we must keep running back to the charging post of God’s Word and “meditate on his law day and night.” That way we can become, “That person (who) is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” May God’s blessings be on you in 2018.
