SMALL THINKING! I think sometimes we Christians are too small in our thinking about God’s kingdom, our local churches and the ability of God to do great things in our midst. This phenomenon occurs in small and large churches, in most any size Christian organization and I believe in most individual Christians. At times I find myself thinking much smaller than God intends for me and much smaller than God has plans for. And we are good at offering God excuses for our thoughts and actions. After all if we fail we don’t want to embarrass God not to mention ourselves. So we analyze, theorize, analyze and estimate cost effectiveness, review the past, tell God how much He can do for us and we squelch the future. I must admit that God usually does much more than I have asked Him for and usually in a way that I hadn’t planned for. And who am I to tell God He is wrong because He didn’t do it my way? All this is to say what the Apostle Paul said long ago.
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21NIV) God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask Him to do because we are usually such small petitioners of the mighty power of God. God works with dynamite and we ask for firecrackers. God produces mighty rivers and we ask for trickling streams. God wants multitudes of lost souls to come to Him and we are busy spending all our puny resources on ones and twos when God has great resources and the ability to bring the ones and twos along with the multitudes. God’s people need to speak up and ask God to do MORE for the church because it is His Church and He is able to do much more than we are asking and it is His power working in and through us that will accomplish the results.
How is your imagination? God is able to do more than we imagine! I have noticed in my more than forty years of Christian ministry that a lot of God’s people are quick to kill imaginations that think outside the prescribed Christian box. Much like Jesus was killed because He definitely thought outside the prescribed religious box. The result is that often too little is accomplished for God’s kingdom unlike the results that came from Jesus’ actions. God thinks BIG. We often think small and though we might have big dreams or imaginations we fail to act on them or we let others kill our imaginations or stifle them. But God says He can do even greater things than we imagine and He can do it through the power that is at work within us. When we align ourselves with God’s Holy Spirit working in us God can and will do great things through us.
Having said all this let us not miss the goal of shaking free from SMALL THINKING. Our goal is that Jesus Christ will be glorified through His Church “throughout out all generations, forever and ever.” If our asking and imagining is only that some local church, some organization or individual can be built up we have missed the mark. God wants to work through us in His power so that Jesus will get the glory forever and ever. Human effort and power can accomplish a lot on its own but the results will not be long lasting. When the body of Christ is empowered by the Holy Spirit of God much will be accomplished for eternity and Jesus’ glory. THINK BIG. PRAY MUCH. WORK HARD. REJOICE IN THE RESULTS.
