JESUS IS ABLE! Big biblical truths can come in small packages. Jude shows us that in his little epistle (letter). In contrast to all the false teachers in the world and the church, stand Jesus Christ and His Word of truth. True Christians are concerned about bearing a good witness for God and not doing anything that would reflect disgrace or dishonor on the name of God and the Lord Jesus Christ. To this point Jude speaks, “To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” (Jude 1:24-25 NIV)
Jesus is able to keep us from stumbling, “messing up in life”. Left to ourselves we are quite capable of doing that very easily. But Jesus is able to help us and He has equipped us in various ways so that He will, “keep us from stumbling” and also do it “without fault” and “with great joy.” Christians have the indwelling Holy Spirit and His power and we also have the Word of God to guide us and with these helps Jesus will keep us from being absolute failures for the cause of His Kingdom. The key here is that even if we are of little faith about our abilities to “keep straight for God” we need to recognize that Jesus is the one who is able to perform this work in us not we ourselves. The salvation experience and the faith steps of the Christian life begin with Jesus and His power, we continue in life on the basis of His strength and power, and we end this earthly life in His strength and power and through His grace. The only abilities we have to keep from stumbling and have great faults in this life are through dependence on Jesus Christ and His abilities to work in us and through us.
The world, the flesh, and the devil are strong foes operating against the Christian to bring us into defeat and disgrace. But Jesus in us is more powerful than all these foes combined. It is Jesus who will keep us and enable us to have victory in this world. It is Jesus who will “present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy.” Does that mean we will never sin again after being saved through Jesus blood? No, it means that the same loving Jesus who saves us will forgive us and help us to press on to victory through His strength because He has already paid the cost for those sins. We may lose a battle in life through our lack of dependence on Jesus but we will not lose the war in life because Jesus has already gained the victory through His shed blood on the cross and defeated the devil and death.
That is why Jude can say that it is through Jesus Christ our Lord that God receives all “glory, majesty, power and authority” for all eternity. The day will come when we as Christians stand before Jesus “without fault and with great joy” based on the work of Jesus in our lives from beginning to end. And I think that we will be amazed that such sinful creatures as us will be so loved and received so warmly into God’s presence.
