WHAT MAKES A PASTOR HAPPY?
WHAT MAKES A PASTOR HAPPY? Some people think Pastors are never happy. Pastors must appear to some as God’s tool to make sure that church members wear sour faces and never experience any fun moments in life. And some Pastors may be like that. I am thankful those men are few and far between. On the other hand there are some Pastors who think ministry is all about fun and hilarity and never deal with the tough issues of the Christian life. I am thankful those men are few and far between. So what does make a Pastor happy? Is it a big salary and benefits? Is it a church that is big in church attendance or is it one that is small in church attendance? Those are good questions and I could list a whole lot more. But since Christians, churches, and Pastors are so different maybe there is no good answer that fits every Pastor.
The Apostle John in writing to his friend Gaius back in the first century A.D. had this to say, “It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” (3 John 1:4 NIV) Of course John was talking about his spiritual children; those who came to Christ under his ministry. After forty plus years in the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ I can tell you that a real Pastor’s heart is more concerned about those who are Christians whom he is ministering to or has ministered to than it is about salary, benefits, church attendance, or a long list of other things. Ministry is about good times, tough times, victories, defeats, tragedies, death, life, fun, seriousness, teaching God’s truth, and a multitude of other things. BUT the one thing that makes/or should make a Pastor happy, gives him great joy, is to see Christians he has ministered to continuing on faithfully in their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Pastors understand what the Apostle John is saying and I trust you do as well.
It makes a Pastor really sad when he hears about those who have shared the Christian life and experience with him and now have fallen into sin or have simply walked away from the Christian life altogether. One is too many but over a lifetime numbers can mount as Satan is alive and well on planet earth. On the other hand what a joy it is to see those who continue on with Jesus, mature in the Christian life, and become leaders in their local churches and other ministries. And what a double joy it is when a Pastor sees Christians dedicating their lives to full-time ministry for Jesus and becoming Pastors or Missionaries. It is true for the Pastor that there is no greater joy than to hear that the people he has ministered to in his lifetime are still walking in God’s truth and serving Him. Make a Pastor happy and continue on with Jesus. You will make God happy too.
